With 2017 on track to be a record-setting year for natural disasters across the globe, the need for hostile environment awareness training couldn’t be greater.

From sweeping hurricanes in the U.S. to monsoon floods across the Caribbean Islands, erupting volcanoes in Southeast Asia, quakes of great magnitude on the Iraq-Iran border and last but not least lethal, mudslides in Sierra Leone and Bangladesh. Havoc has truly been wrought.

The 2016 Aid Worker Security Report (produced annually by Humanitarian Outcomes with data sourced from its Aid Worker Security Database) makes for sobering reading. The report provides a snapshot of the number of aid workers who fell victim to an attack, with additional breakdowns on where the incidents took place and by what means.

According to statistics from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 1,244 journalists were killed worldwide during the last 25 years as a direct result of their work. The figures make sobering reading.
